Doing a Swap? Post here

2JZ 300zx

Well, i was asked to do a write up on here so here we go. To start things off my car was originally a TT and i custom fabricated a single turbo setup for it. Ran that for a couple years and decided to put a 2jz in it!! ive always loved the engine but hated the look of the supra "no offense to anyone" i just love the Z better.
Onto the swap, It is a stock bottom end 2jz with ARP hardware crower cams 950cc fuel injector clinic injectors, 3" intercooler piping, Turbo Concepts BOV and wastegate, Borg warner S400 from turbo concepts, greddy knock off manifold that i did some work to, my custom full 3.5" exhaust from the turbo back, R-154 trans, and a Haltech E11v2 stand alone. Im sure im forgetting stuff but here are some pics.
From the beginning!!
I will tell you, unlike what everyone has said, its not that bad of a swap. I had to notch the cross member for the oil pan, then it was braced back in after the engine was in. I had to do NOTHING to the trans tunnel except for a couple swings with the hammer for the starter bolts. Could be because i don't have the 6 speed but my hood also would have fit if my turbo wasn't so damn big!! As you can see, the shifter lined up perfect. Also i made solid engine mounts. Could have used normal rubber but didn't think the vibration would be that bad, and it wasn't... really you can barley feel a difference from my VG with rubber mounts!!

Yes, stock crossmember just modified for the oil pan to fit. You have to C notch quite a bit out but it is all braced back in and i can jack the car up from it so i think its strong enough.

I really want to do the 2JZ Swap for obvious reasons. But being there isn't a kit floating around for the swap, it kinda worried me a bit. In all reality, how hard was the swap? What did you do for the engine mounts? Did you just weld up your own? It doesn't look like you had to relocate anything.

Im stoked to start an Inline 6 swap. But i can assure you, my single turbo conversion won't be as big as yours :D

Dam, that looks killer. Do you have experience with the ECU or are you planing to take it slow and easy while you get the tune right.

It's going to be hard resisting the urge to put the pedal to the metal.... lol

Thanks for the comments guys, In all reality the swap is not that bad. I started this project in early June and finished it in late July and that was waiting for parts too.
Yes i did just weld the mounts in, well actually i welded up what looks like steel boxes for a pedastool and bolted the stock 2j mount to that.
Well with the tuning, i don't know to much in that department. I can machine, weld fab anything to do anything!! but don't have a clue with tuning  wish i did. But the owner of turbo concepts is a good friend of mine and happens to be a haltech dealer so that it why i went with them, he is tuning it for free cause he loves the swap.... i lucked out!
As far as my bad luck goes, The clutch i bought from what i thought was a reputable online company and was suppost to be a stage 5 but insted i got a 5 disk with a stage 2 pressure plate!!!! well now he wont return e-mails, calls, and his store is no longer there!! i got the shaft. Basically the clutch slips at 1/4 throttle and i cant even get the wastegate to open...... did one time and man did it sound sweet! but im saving for a clutch now and hope to have it soon, even though its snowing in MI today...... i hate it. Oh and the Other Z is a buddies i put an engine in last year.

It would be solid as well, like i said it could have easily been left rubber but it was my choice to go solid. I actually used the 300zx trans X member and it is boxed and welded to the upper part of the 154's Xmember, so underneath it looks original with the 6 bolts :)

Thanks for getting back on here to leave us some info, I was the one asking on streetfire. I can't view the pictures at work right now, but I'm sure I'll have some comments once I get home and can see them.

Thanks for the post!!! I can't say I not more than a little excited!! All the swaps I've seen had the cam cover sticking out of the hood. I've been told the 2JZ wouldn't fit under the hood. Were you able to retain use of the stock gauges? Did you choose the 5 speed because of its size or did you get a good deal on it? Your engine bay looks great, I hope you get the clutch straightened out so you can enjoy it.

From what he said on streetfire he seemed to think that the 6-speed would have probably been an issue as Luis had said before. He did have to do some simple reworking of the tranny tunnel with a hammer to fit the starter for the R154.

I tried calling your cell a week or so ago to tell you about this car, you get a new number? It didn't sound like you on the voicemail.

No, its the same phone number. I would have no problem going with a 5 speed. It's not as tough as the Getrag R156 but still excellent quality...and it fits! I was thinking of getting rid of my whole car when Michaelsevilla said he wanted my engine, but since I've seen this swap, I'm keeping my Z right where it is! The motor is still up for grabs but I'm keeping the rest. Are you still interested in my engine? It would really be a big advantage to me having the same engine in both of my toys. It looks like I'll be bringing the Supra home right after Christmas if it doesn't snow.

Only paid $100 for it, then got a spare for free!!

I really think i could make the 6 speed work. Think like this Luis had to remake his trans tunnel... But, his engine was also sticking out of the hood, like valve cover!! Well i have plenty of room in between my hood and valve cover so i probably would not have to make the trans tunnel any higher cause for whatever reason i got my engine to sit so much lower. Bet ya i could make it fit with a hammer at the most!!
